This piece was originally submitted for a contest but did not win, however, I was inspired to transform the card slightly and use it as the beginning of my own Tarot card deck- I will be designing the entire 78-card deck, slowly but surely :3
Based upon Edgar Allen Poe's story "The Black Cat" in this, the cat represents the demons that plague us when we do not deal with the turmoil within. The Death card also represents dragging things out beyond their expiration and an inability to accept Death as an ending of things so that we can move onward.
Here the key dangles before us, promising to unlock the bounty of renewal (represented by the lilies which are shrouded behind the frayed noose) if only we would reach forth and take it. The time on the clock , approaching 2, also councils us to seek harmony and restore balance within ourselves. All of these elements work together, urging us to let the endings happen so we can begin anew.
When this card is inverted it represents an inability to relinquish the Past causing us to drag it constantly into the Present and block our Futures like shackles weighing down our every step.
